Overview

Maseloxavir (also known as ZX-7101A) is an oral, small-molecule antiviral agent developed by Zhengxiang Medical for the treatment and prevention of influenza A and B. It functions as a cap-dependent endonuclease (CEN) inhibitor, targeting the polymerase acidic (PA) subunit of the influenza viral RNA polymerase complex. By inhibiting this enzyme, maseloxavir prevents the 'cap-snatching' process, thereby halting viral mRNA synthesis and replication. This mechanism is distinct from neuraminidase inhibitors like oseltamivir, which prevent the release of new viral particles. Maseloxavir is designed for single-dose administration and is currently in Phase III clinical development in China for the treatment of uncomplicated influenza and for post-exposure prophylaxis in household contacts.
