Masitinib is an orally administered, potent, and selective small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor. It primarily targets the receptor tyrosine kinase c-Kit (stem cell factor receptor), but also inhibits platelet-derived growth factor receptors (PDGFR), fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3), colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R), lymphocyte-specific protein tyrosine kinase (Lck), and focal adhesion kinase (FAK). By modulating mast cells and macrophages, it exerts immunomodulatory effects relevant to oncology, inflammatory diseases, and certain central nervous system disorders. In veterinary medicine, it is approved for the treatment of mast cell tumors in dogs. In humans, it has been investigated for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, mastocytosis, severe asthma, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer and other conditions[1][2][4][5].
