Mastic oil is a plant-derived natural essential oil steam-distilled from the resin of the mastic tree (*Pistacia lentiscus*), native to the Mediterranean region (particularly the Greek island of Chios). It possesses potent anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antibiofilm properties, primarily attributed to its rich terpene composition (including alpha-pinene and beta-myrcene). Mastic oil is formulated as nasal drops or sprays and is used as a supportive treatment or medical device (such as Bactorinol) to relieve nasal congestion, fluidify secretions, and disrupt bacterial biofilms. It has been clinically evaluated in randomized controlled trials, including studies sponsored by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, as a postoperative topical nasal treatment following functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) to prevent disease recurrence and promote mucosal healing.
