Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Materna is a comprehensive prenatal multivitamin and mineral supplement formulated to support the nutritional requirements of women during preconception, pregnancy, and lactation. It contains a broad spectrum of essential nutrients, most notably 1 mg of folic acid, which is critical for the prevention of neural tube defects (NTDs) such as spina bifida in the developing fetus. The formulation typically includes iron for blood health, calcium and vitamin D for bone maintenance, and various B-vitamins for energy metabolism. Originally developed by Wyeth (later acquired by Pfizer), the brand is now part of the Haleon consumer healthcare portfolio. Depending on the jurisdiction and the concentration of folic acid, Materna is available as both an over-the-counter supplement and a prescription-strength medication.
