Overview

Maternal CMV-specific Cytotoxic T-Lymphocytes (CTLs) is an investigational adoptive cellular immunotherapy developed by New York Medical College for the treatment of neonates with moderate to severe congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. The therapy involves the infusion of CMV-specific T cells derived from the patient's mother (maternal donor) who has demonstrated an immune response to CMV antigens. These CTLs are intended to provide immediate, virus-specific cellular immunity to the neonate, whose own immune system is immature or compromised by the infection. In clinical trials, this cell therapy is administered as an adjunct to standard-of-care antiviral medications like valganciclovir or ganciclovir to improve clinical outcomes and facilitate viral clearance. The development of this therapy has been supported by the FDA Office of Orphan Products Development (OOPD).
