Matrikine M9 is a newly discovered matrix-derived peptide (matrikine) identified in the intestinal tissue of patients with Crohn's disease (CD) fibrostenosis. Developed by researchers at University College London and collaborating institutions, M9 is one of a series of bioactive peptides (M1-M9) found to be specific to CD-affected tissue. In vitro studies on primary human intestinal myofibroblasts (iMFBs) demonstrate that M9 significantly induces cell proliferation and migration. It also triggers an inflammatory response and modulates pathways associated with smooth muscle contraction, extracellular matrix organization, and vascular permeability. Due to its specific presence in diseased tissue and its profibrotic biological activity, matrikine M9 is being investigated as a potential biomarker and therapeutic target for the management of intestinal fibrosis in Crohn's disease.
