Overview

Matrine is a quinolizidine alkaloid extracted from the roots of Sophora flavescens and related plants. It is a small molecule with diverse pharmacological activities including anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor (anticancer), antiviral, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects. Mechanistically, matrine acts as an agonist at kappa opioid receptors and mu opioid receptors. It also modulates multiple cellular pathways such as TGF-beta/Smad signaling and apoptosis-related proteins (e.g., Bcl-2 family), contributing to its anticancer and anti-inflammatory properties. Clinically in China, it is used for chronic hepatitis B (to improve elevated transaminases and abnormal bilirubin) and as an adjunct in cancer therapy during radiotherapy or chemotherapy[1][2][3][8].
