Overview
Matrix III Cisplatin is a localized, controlled-release drug delivery platform developed by Royer Biomedical for the treatment of equine sarcoids. It utilizes a proprietary calcium-based matrix (Matrix III technology) to deliver cisplatin, a platinum-based cytotoxic chemotherapy agent that acts as a DNA crosslinker. The formulation consists of biodegradable beads designed for local implantation or application directly at the tumor site, typically following surgical debulking of lesions up to 3 cm in diameter. This delivery method is intended to concentrate the therapeutic agent at the site of the lesion while minimizing systemic exposure and associated toxicity. The product has received Minor Use/Minor Species (MUMS) designation from the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine.
