Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mature dendritic cells transfected with human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) is an autologous dendritic cell-based cancer immunotherapy. The treatment involves harvesting dendritic cells from the patient, maturing them, and transfecting them ex vivo with mRNA encoding hTERT, a key catalytic subunit of telomerase that is highly overexpressed in various cancers, including glioblastoma and cancer stem cells. Upon reintroduction into the patient via intradermal injection, these antigen-presenting cells present hTERT peptides to the host immune system, stimulating a robust cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) response against telomerase-expressing tumor cells. This platform is being evaluated in clinical trials, such as the Phase II/III DEN-STEM trial sponsored by Oslo University Hospital, for the treatment of newly diagnosed glioblastoma in combination with standard chemoradiotherapy.
