Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mavacoxib is a long-acting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the coxib class, specifically developed for veterinary use in dogs. It functions as a selective inhibitor of the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme, which is responsible for the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. By selectively targeting COX-2 while sparing COX-1 at therapeutic concentrations, mavacoxib effectively reduces pain and inflammation associated with degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis) with a reduced risk of gastrointestinal side effects compared to non-selective NSAIDs. A distinguishing feature of mavacoxib is its exceptionally long elimination half-life in dogs, which allows for a convenient once-monthly dosing regimen following an initial loading period. Xiamen Origin Biotech is developing this small molecule for the veterinary market to address chronic pain and inflammation.
