Maxicor is a high-concentration omega-3 fatty acid product, primarily composed of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in ethyl ester form. Developed by the pharmaceutical company Grindeks, it is utilized for the management of hypertriglyceridemia and as an adjunct therapy in the secondary prevention of cardiovascular events, such as myocardial infarction. The drug functions by modulating lipid metabolism; it acts as an agonist for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha), promoting the beta-oxidation of fatty acids, and inhibits diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT), thereby reducing the hepatic production of triglycerides and very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL). Additionally, it may enhance the activity of lipoprotein lipase, further facilitating the clearance of triglycerides from the plasma.
