Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MAXTussin is an over-the-counter (OTC) consumer healthcare product line developed and marketed by Akron Pharma for the treatment of cough and chest congestion. The product line includes a single-ingredient formulation containing guaifenesin (an expectorant) and a dual-action 'DM' formulation containing both guaifenesin and dextromethorphan hydrobromide (a cough suppressant). Guaifenesin acts by thinning and loosening mucus in the airways to facilitate its removal, while dextromethorphan suppresses the cough reflex by acting on the cough center in the medulla. These products are indicated for symptoms associated with the common cold, bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions. They are formulated as sugar-free, alcohol-free, and dye-free liquids intended for adults and children aged 12 and older.
