Overview

MBX-2982 is a potent, selective, orally active small molecule agonist of the G protein-coupled receptor 119 (GPR119). It was developed as a potential first-in-class treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus. The drug acts through a dual mechanism: it directly stimulates pancreatic beta cells to increase glucose-dependent insulin secretion and also promotes the release of incretin hormones such as GLP-1 from the gut. This dual action may offer improved glucose homeostasis compared to existing therapies, with additional potential benefits for weight loss and islet cell health. MBX-2982 has been evaluated in multiple Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials for type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes, showing significant reductions in postprandial glucose excursions and increases in insulin and GLP-1 levels. It was also investigated for use in type 1 diabetes mellitus and liver disorders but development has been discontinued for these indications[3][4][5][6][7].
