Drug intelligence / Profile preview
mdc-STM is an investigational long-acting injectable formulation of ivermectin developed to reduce malaria transmission. It utilizes MedinCell’s BEPO® polymer-based technology, enabling a sustained release of ivermectin over three months from a single subcutaneous injection. The primary mechanism is community-level vector control—mosquitoes that bite treated individuals are killed, thereby reducing the local mosquito population and interrupting malaria transmission cycles. This approach does not directly protect the injected individual from malaria but aims to lower overall disease incidence in high-transmission areas, especially during the rainy season when risk peaks. The product is being developed for use in low- and middle-income countries with support from Unitaid and in partnership with organizations such as IRD, IRSS, CIRDES, and the Medicines Patent Pool[1][2][4][5].
