Overview

MDCO-157 is an intravenous formulation of clopidogrel, a P2Y12 receptor antagonist, developed using Ligand Pharmaceuticals' Captisol technology (sulfobutylether beta-cyclodextrin). It was designed to provide a rapid-onset antiplatelet effect, particularly for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) who cannot take oral medications. The Medicines Company licensed the drug from Ligand but terminated the agreement in 2013, returning the rights to Ligand. The formulation aimed to overcome the slow onset of action associated with oral clopidogrel by providing immediate bioavailability of the active metabolite.
