Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MDCX101 is a topical gel formulation of canakinumab, a human monoclonal antibody that acts as a potent and selective inhibitor of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β). Developed by researchers at the University of Auckland (UniServices), MDCX101 is specifically designed for the treatment of tophaceous gout, a chronic condition characterized by the accumulation of monosodium urate crystals (tophi) in joints and soft tissues. By delivering canakinumab topically, the treatment aims to neutralize IL-1β locally within the tophus environment, thereby reducing the chronic inflammation that drives tophus formation and potentially promoting the resolution of these deposits. This localized approach is intended to provide therapeutic benefits while minimizing the systemic side effects associated with parenteral IL-1 inhibition. The drug has been evaluated in clinical trials to assess its efficacy in reducing tophus size and improving clinical outcomes in patients with advanced gout.
