MDG-1 is a water-soluble beta-D-fructan polysaccharide extracted from the roots of *Ophiopogon japonicus*, a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine. It is primarily investigated for its potential in treating Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and associated complications like diabetic nephropathy. MDG-1 is poorly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and functions as a prebiotic-like substance; it is fermented by the gut microbiota into metabolites such as monosugars and butanedioic acid. These metabolites are thought to exert anti-diabetic effects by suppressing intestinal glucose absorption, enhancing liver glycogenesis, inhibiting glycogenolysis, and promoting the secretion of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1).
