Overview

MDS-786 (also referred to as MCI-786) is a selective 5-HT2A receptor antagonist originally developed by Mitsubishi Pharma Corporation (now Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma). The compound was primarily investigated for its potential in treating cardiovascular and renal complications, specifically focusing on its ability to inhibit serotonin-induced platelet aggregation and vasoconstriction. By selectively blocking the 5-HT2A receptor, MDS-786 aims to prevent the pathological effects of serotonin in conditions such as thrombosis, chronic arterial occlusion, and diabetic nephropathy. Research has demonstrated its efficacy in reducing albuminuria and improving renal function in animal models of diabetes, suggesting a protective role against serotonin-mediated glomerular damage. Despite promising preclinical data, the clinical development of MDS-786 appears to have been superseded by other agents in the same class, such as sarpogrelate.
