Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MDT2004 is an intraspinal formulation of gabapentin developed by Medtronic for the treatment of chronic intractable pain. Unlike traditional oral gabapentin, MDT2004 is designed for delivery via an implanted intrathecal infusion system directly into the spinal space. This targeted delivery route aims to provide potent analgesia while minimizing systemic side effects by using lower doses. Gabapentin acts by binding to the α2δ-1 subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system, which modulates the release of excitatory neurotransmitters involved in pain signaling. The drug was evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials to assess its safety and efficacy when delivered through an implanted drug infusion system.
