ME1111 is a novel small molecule antifungal agent developed for the topical treatment of onychomycosis (fungal nail infection). It is highly active against dermatophytes, particularly Trichophyton species, and demonstrates excellent penetration into human nails. The mechanism of action involves selective inhibition of succinate dehydrogenase (complex II) in the mitochondrial electron transport chain of dermatophytes, leading to disruption of fungal energy production and cell death. ME1111 shows potent fungicidal activity at clinically relevant concentrations and has a low potential for resistance development in target organisms. The drug was developed by Meiji Seika Pharma but its clinical development for onychomycosis has been discontinued after phase 2 trials[1][3][4][6].
