Overview

The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is a live-attenuated biologic vaccine used to provide active immunization against measles, mumps, and rubella infections. It is a combination product containing live attenuated strains of the three viruses: typically the Enders' attenuated Edmonston strain for measles, the Jeryl Lynn strain for mumps, and the Wistar RA 27/3 strain for rubella. The vaccine works by stimulating the human immune system to produce both humoral (antibody) and cellular immune responses against these pathogens. It is widely administered as part of standard pediatric immunization schedules. In specific clinical contexts, such as a Phase 4 study sponsored by Children's Mercy Hospital Kansas City, the vaccine is being evaluated for safety and efficacy in specialized populations like pediatric heart transplant recipients.
