The MMR vaccine is a live attenuated combination vaccine designed to provide immunity against measles, mumps, and rubella. It contains weakened strains of the measles virus (typically Schwarz or Edmonston-Zagreb strains), mumps virus (such as Jeryl Lynn or RIT 4385), and rubella virus (usually RA 27/3). Administered primarily to children in a two-dose schedule, the vaccine stimulates both humoral and cellular immune responses. It has been a cornerstone of public health programs globally since the 1970s, significantly reducing the incidence of these viral infections and their associated complications. In the Netherlands, it is known as the BMR vaccine and is managed by the RIVM, which has conducted specific observational studies (BMR-0 and BMR-1) to evaluate immunological responses during outbreaks and regular immunization schedules.
