Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The measles and rubella vaccine is a combination vaccine containing live, attenuated (weakened) strains of both the measles virus and the rubella virus. It is designed to induce immunity against both diseases by stimulating the body’s immune system to produce protective antibodies. The mechanism of action involves exposure to these weakened viruses, which do not cause disease in healthy individuals but prompt an immune response that results in long-lasting protection. The primary indication for this vaccine is the prevention of measles and rubella infections, both of which are highly contagious viral diseases with potentially serious complications. This combination may be used alone or as part of broader vaccines such as MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), but specifically refers here only to formulations containing just measles and rubella components.
