Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Measles vaccine live attenuated** is a preparation of live, weakened (attenuated) measles virus designed to induce active immunity against measles infection. The attenuated virus simulates natural infection, prompting the immune system to mount an effective antibody and cellular immune response, thus conferring protection against future measles virus exposure. This vaccine is primarily administered for the prevention of measles (rubeola) and has markedly reduced the incidence of this potentially serious disease, which can cause pneumonia, encephalitis, and death, especially in infants and adults. The vaccine is no longer available as a monovalent product in many regions; it is most commonly used in combination vaccines such as MMR (measles, mumps, rubella). Its use is recommended for routine immunization in children as well as adults without evidence of measles immunity.
