The measles vaccine is a live attenuated viral vaccine primarily used for the active immunization of children and adults against measles infection. Most modern formulations are derived from the Edmonston strain, including the Moraten, Schwarz, and Edmonston-Zagreb lineages. The vaccine works by inducing a robust Th1-mediated immune response and the production of neutralizing antibodies that target the measles virus hemagglutinin (H) and fusion (F) proteins, thereby preventing viral entry into host cells via receptors such as CD46, CD150 (SLAM), and Nectin-4. Beyond its primary role in public health, the vaccine has been investigated for its oncolytic potential in treating solid tumors, such as ovarian cancer, and for its immunomodulatory effects in inflammatory conditions like atopic dermatitis. It is frequently administered as a monovalent injection or as part of combination vaccines such as MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) or MMRV (measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella).
