mebanazine

Mebanazine is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) of the hydrazine chemical class that was introduced in the 1960s for the treatment of depression. It was marketed under the trade name Actomol and administered orally. Mebanazine acts by inhibiting monoamine oxidase, thereby increasing levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in the brain. The drug was withdrawn from clinical use due to its hepatotoxic potential. In addition to its antidepressant effects, animal studies indicated it had anorexic properties and could potentiate hypoglycemic responses to insulin while delaying recovery of blood glucose levels. Mebanazine also demonstrated inhibitory effects on cartilage growth and pituitary function in animal models[1][2][3][4][5][6].
