Mebeverine is a musculotropic antispasmodic agent used for the symptomatic treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other gastrointestinal conditions characterized by smooth muscle spasm. It acts directly on the smooth muscle of the gut, particularly the colon, to relieve cramps and pain without significantly affecting normal intestinal motility or producing systemic anticholinergic side effects. The drug's mechanism of action involves the blockade of voltage-gated sodium channels and the inhibition of intracellular calcium accumulation, which prevents sustained muscle contraction. Originally developed by Solvay Pharmaceuticals (now part of Abbott), mebeverine is available in various oral formulations, including immediate-release tablets and sustained-release capsules.
