Overview

Mebicar is a small molecule anxiolytic (tranquilizer) and nootropic medication primarily used in Latvia and Russia. It is chemically known as tetramethylglycoluril and is structurally related to endogenous metabolites. Mebicar exerts moderate tranquilizing effects without causing muscle relaxation or impairing mental or physical activity. Its mechanism of action involves modulation of the limbic-reticular system—particularly the hypothalamus emotional zone—and regulation of four major neurotransmitter systems: GABAergic (γ-aminobutyric acid), cholinergic, serotonergic, and adrenergic pathways. Receptor studies suggest it may act as an agonist at GABA-A receptors at a site distinct from benzodiazepines[5][6]. Mebicar has anti-anxiety properties without sedative side effects typical of benzodiazepines; it does not cause euphoria or dependence[2][5][6]. It also exhibits nootropic effects by improving cognitive function and attention[8], has antioxidant properties[5], stabilizes cell membranes under stress conditions[5], improves cerebral blood flow[5], and can be used for nicotine withdrawal support as well as various neurotic disorders including somatoform vegetative dysfunctions[7].
