Mebucaïne

Mebucaïne is an over-the-counter (OTC) combination medication marketed by Spirig HealthCare (a subsidiary of the STADA Group) in Switzerland. It is primarily used for the local treatment of inflammatory and infectious conditions of the mouth and throat, including sore throats, pharyngitis, stomatitis, and gingivitis. The most common formulation, Mebucaïne f, contains cetylpyridinium chloride and lidocaine hydrochloride. Cetylpyridinium chloride is a quaternary ammonium antiseptic that reduces the microbial load in the oral cavity by disrupting cell membranes. Lidocaine hydrochloride is a local anesthetic that provides rapid symptomatic relief by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in sensory neurons, thereby inhibiting the transmission of pain signals. The product is available in various forms, including lozenges and sprays, designed for immediate release and topical application to the oropharyngeal mucosa.
