Overview

Mebufotenin is a synthetic and naturally occurring psychedelic compound of the tryptamine class, also known as 5-MeO-DMT or 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine. It acts primarily as a non-selective serotonin receptor agonist with high affinity for the serotonin 5-HT1A receptor and lower affinity for the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor. Mebufotenin is being developed in inhaled (GH001) and intranasal (BPL-003) formulations for rapid-onset treatment of treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Clinical trials have demonstrated significant reductions in depressive symptoms with single-day dosing regimens. The drug produces profound psychedelic effects distinct from other serotonergic psychedelics and has been associated with mystical experiences but relatively fewer visual effects[1][2][7][10].
