Overview

Mebutamate is a biscarbamate-class small molecule drug with anxiolytic, sedative, hypnotic, and antihypertensive effects. It acts as a central nervous system depressant with pharmacological properties similar to barbiturates but is only about one-third as potent as secobarbital for sedation. Its mechanism of action involves positive allosteric modulation of the GABA-A receptor at the beta subunit, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission in the brain. Unlike benzodiazepines (which act at the alpha subunit), carbamates like mebutamate and barbiturates also possess analgesic properties. Mebutamate has been marketed under several trade names including Capla and Dormate. It was originally developed by Carter Products in the late 1950s and has been used primarily for its sedative and anxiolytic effects; it also exhibits hypnotic activity at higher doses without significant next-day residual effects[1][3][4][5].
