Overview

Mebutizide is a thiazide-like diuretic of the benzothiadiazinesulfonamide class, primarily used as an antihypertensive agent and for the treatment of edema. It acts by inhibiting sodium reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule of the nephron, specifically blocking the Na+/Cl− symporter. This leads to increased urinary excretion of sodium and water, reducing blood volume and lowering blood pressure. Like other thiazides, it can cause electrolyte imbalances such as hypokalemia due to increased potassium excretion. Mebutizide has demonstrated efficacy in lowering both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in clinical studies[2][3][4][6]. Its maximum clinical trial phase is II[2].
