Overview

Mecasermin is a recombinant human insulin-like growth factor-1 (rhIGF-1) that mimics the effects of endogenous IGF-1, a key mediator of growth hormone-induced somatic growth and a potent stimulator of collagen synthesis. In a clinical investigation led by Bispebjerg Hospital, mecasermin was evaluated for its ability to stimulate collagen production in the patellar tendon, muscle, and skin of patients with classic Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). Classic EDS is a connective tissue disorder typically caused by defects in type V collagen, resulting in joint hypermobility and skin fragility. The study (NCT01446783) utilized local intratendinous injections to determine if IGF-1 receptor activation could improve the structural integrity of compliant connective tissues in these patients.
