Mecasermin + somatropin refers to a combination of two distinct recombinant protein drugs used in the management of growth disorders. Mecasermin is a recombinant human insulin-like growth factor-1 (rhIGF-1), which directly stimulates growth by activating IGF-1 receptors, promoting mitogenesis and linear bone growth, especially in children with severe primary IGF-1 deficiency or those with growth hormone gene deletion who have developed neutralizing antibodies to GH[2][5][6]. Somatropin is recombinant human growth hormone (GH), which acts on GH receptors primarily in the liver and other tissues to stimulate endogenous production of IGF-1, thereby mediating its anabolic and growth-promoting effects. Both agents are indicated for pediatric patients with specific forms of short stature due to deficiencies in their respective pathways; however, they are not typically co-administered except under special circumstances where both GH and IGF-1 replacement may be considered necessary. Each drug has unique mechanisms but ultimately promotes tissue and skeletal development through overlapping endocrine axes.
