Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mecasermin rinfabate is a recombinant human complex consisting of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and its primary binding protein, insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3). This complex is designed to mimic the endogenous circulating form of IGF-1, which increases its half-life and reduces the risk of hypoglycemia compared to IGF-1 alone (mecasermin). Originally developed by Insmed and marketed as Iplex for growth failure in children with severe primary IGF-1 deficiency, its commercial use for that indication was restricted due to patent litigation. More recently, the drug (under the code OHB-607) is being developed by Ohb Neonatology Limited for the prevention of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in extremely premature infants, aiming to supplement the low levels of IGF-1 typically found in this population.
