Overview

Mecbentu is an oral formulation of the cytotoxic alkylating agent bendamustine, developed by the South Korean bio-venture Mecox CureMed (MEDICOX) in collaboration with Boryung Pharmaceutical. While bendamustine is traditionally administered via intravenous injection for the treatment of various hematologic malignancies, Mecbentu is designed to provide a more convenient oral alternative to improve patient compliance and quality of life. The drug functions as a bifunctional alkylating agent, creating covalent cross-links between DNA strands that lead to DNA damage, inhibition of replication, and apoptosis. As of 2022, Mecbentu was undergoing Phase 2 clinical trials for the treatment of blood cancers.
