Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mechnikov probiotics is a microbial formulation investigated for the management of anterior resection syndrome (ARS) in patients undergoing surgery for sigmoid colon cancer. The intervention was evaluated in the POSTCARE study (NCT03531606), a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial led by Dr. Kye Bong-Hyeon at The Catholic University of Korea. The treatment regimen involves oral administration of the probiotic twice daily for four weeks, beginning one week prior to surgery and continuing for three weeks postoperatively. The therapy is designed to stabilize the intestinal microbiota and improve postoperative defecatory function, although clinical results indicated limited significant improvement in overall bowel function compared to placebo.
