Overview

Meclofenoxate, also known as centrophenoxine, is a cholinergic nootropic compound used both as a dietary supplement and as a drug in some countries. It is an ester formed from dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) and 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid. Meclofenoxate acts primarily by increasing the availability of choline in the brain, which enhances acetylcholine synthesis—a neurotransmitter critical for memory and cognitive function. It has been studied for its potential to improve cognitive symptoms associated with dementia and age-related cognitive decline, with some evidence suggesting benefits in memory enhancement and neuroprotection. Meclofenoxate may also increase cellular membrane phospholipids and reduce age-associated lipofuscin accumulation in neural tissue. While it is available over-the-counter or by prescription depending on the country, clinical evidence supporting its efficacy remains limited[1][3][5].
