Medazepam is a long‐acting benzodiazepine derivative used primarily for its anxiolytic, sedative, anticonvulsant, and skeletal muscle relaxant properties. It acts as a prodrug that is metabolized to nordazepam and other active benzodiazepines, contributing to its prolonged therapeutic effect. Medazepam enhances inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system by allosteric modulation of the GABA(A) receptor complex, increasing the effect of gamma‐aminobutyric acid (GABA), the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. This results in reduced neuronal excitability and produces calming effects useful for treating anxiety disorders. It may also be prescribed for insomnia related to anxiety or stress and has been used off-label for conditions such as muscle spasms or certain gastrointestinal disorders when combined with other agents[1][2][3][5][6].
