Overview

MEDI8662 is a quadrivalent live attenuated influenza vaccine (Q/LAIV) developed by MedImmune, the biologics research and development arm of AstraZeneca. It is designed to provide protection against four influenza virus strains: two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata). The vaccine is administered intranasally as a 0.2 mL spray and is notable for its use of a blow-fill-seal (BFS) delivery system (Q/LAIV-BFS). This system involves an automated process where the vaccine container is formed, filled, and sealed in a continuous sequence. MEDI8662 contains cold-adapted, temperature-sensitive, attenuated viruses that replicate in the nasopharynx to induce mucosal and systemic immune responses, mimicking natural infection without causing systemic disease. It was evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials to demonstrate immunologic noninferiority to trivalent FluMist formulations.
