Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Medicago's rabies virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine is an experimental plant-derived biologic developed to prevent rabies infection. Utilizing Medicago's proprietary Proficia technology, the vaccine is produced in *Nicotiana benthamiana* plants, which act as bioreactors to express the rabies virus glycoprotein. These proteins self-assemble into non-infectious VLPs that mimic the physical structure of the rabies virus, thereby inducing a robust immune response and the production of neutralizing antibodies. Although the candidate demonstrated efficacy in preclinical animal models and was slated for clinical evaluation, the program was terminated in February 2023 when the parent company, Mitsubishi Chemical Group, shuttered Medicago's operations.
