Overview

Medicago sativa pollen is a biologic allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the Medicago sativa plant, also known as alfalfa. It is used as a diagnostic agent to identify allergic sensitivities in patients with suspected inhalant allergies. The extract contains proteins and allergens from alfalfa pollen that, when administered through skin prick testing, provoke an IgE-mediated immune response in sensitized individuals. This localized reaction helps confirm an allergy to alfalfa pollen. It was first approved in the United States in 1965 and is manufactured by several companies as an injectable solution.
