Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Honevo is a topical, natural-product-based formulation consisting of 90% kānuka honey (derived from *Kunzea ericoides* blossoms) and 10% glycerin. Developed by the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand (MRINZ), it is primarily indicated for the treatment of herpes simplex labialis (cold sores). The formulation leverages the antimicrobial and wound-healing properties of kānuka honey, which have been shown in large-scale randomised controlled trials to be statistically equivalent to 5% aciclovir cream in terms of healing time and pain reduction. Honevo is also used for other dermatological conditions such as rosacea and acne, where it acts by providing a protective barrier and an osmotic environment that inhibits microbial growth and promotes tissue repair.
