Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Medical grade manuka honey is a standardized, highly purified therapeutic agent derived from the *Leptospermum scoparium* (manuka) plant. Developed by ManukaMed LP, it is being investigated as a nebulized inhalation treatment for respiratory viral infections, including COVID-19 and the common cold. The primary bioactive component is methylglyoxal (MGO), which exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. The drug is administered via nebulization to deliver aerosolized droplets directly to the respiratory tract, where it is believed to act against pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 and rhinoviruses. A Phase 1 safety and tolerability study has been conducted in healthy adults to assess its effects on lung function and vital signs.
