Overview

Medical oxygen (100% O2) is a gas therapy being investigated for the prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN), particularly in patients with pre-existing chronic kidney disease undergoing coronary angiography. The intervention, known as normobaric hyperoxygenation, involves the administration of pure oxygen via a mask or nasal cannula to increase the partial pressure of oxygen in the arterial blood. The primary mechanism of action is to counteract renal medullary hypoxia, a critical factor in the pathogenesis of CIN. Contrast media can cause intense vasoconstriction and increased metabolic demand in the renal medulla; by enhancing systemic oxygen delivery, this therapy aims to maintain adequate tissue oxygenation in the kidney, thereby preventing acute kidney injury and preserving renal function following exposure to iodine-based contrast agents.
