Overview

This refers to the medical treatment control arm of a clinical trial conducted at the University of São Paulo General Hospital (NCT01441063). The protocol is designed for the conservative management of encapsulated blebs, a complication following trabeculectomy in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. The treatment regimen involves the sequential or combined use of topical ocular hypotensive medications, specifically non-specific beta-blockers, prostaglandin analogs, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, and selective alpha-2 adrenergic agonists. These pharmacological agents work by either decreasing the production of aqueous humor or increasing its outflow to lower intraocular pressure. Additionally, the protocol incorporates digital massage of the eye to mechanically facilitate aqueous humor filtration through the filtering bleb.
