Medihoney Wound Gel

Medihoney Wound Gel (also known as Medihoney Antibacterial Wound Gel) is a topical medical-grade honey-based formulation developed by Comvita and manufactured/distributed by Integra LifeSciences (formerly Derma Sciences). Composed of 80% active Leptospermum (Manuka) honey and 20% natural gelling agents, the gel is designed to maintain its physical integrity at the wound site even in the presence of body heat and wound fluid. It is cleared by the FDA as a medical device (wound and burn dressing) to maintain a moist environment conducive to healing and to provide a protective barrier against bacterial pathogens. The gel exerts broad-spectrum, non-specific antimicrobial activity through multiple mechanisms, including high osmolarity, low pH, and hydrogen peroxide generation. In clinical research, it was evaluated in the Phase 3 HONEYPOT trial by the Australasian Kidney Trials Network for the prevention of peritoneal dialysis catheter-associated infections in patients with chronic renal failure, though it did not show superiority over standard mupirocin-based prophylaxis.
