MCT/LCT fat emulsion injection is a sterile, non-pyrogenic lipid emulsion intended for intravenous administration as a source of calories and essential fatty acids in patients requiring parenteral nutrition. The formulation consists of a 1:1 mixture of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), typically derived from coconut or palm kernel oil, and long-chain triglycerides (LCT), typically derived from soybean oil. MCTs are more rapidly cleared from the bloodstream and oxidized for energy compared to LCTs, providing a fast energy source and potentially reducing the metabolic stress on the liver. LCTs provide essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids necessary for structural integrity of cell membranes and inflammatory signaling. This combination is designed to optimize lipid metabolism and improve tolerance compared to pure LCT emulsions.
