Overview

Medronic acid is a small molecule bisphosphonate used primarily as a chelating agent in diagnostic nuclear medicine. It has high affinity for hydroxyapatite crystals in bone, allowing it to localize to areas of altered osteogenesis. In clinical practice, it is most commonly used as the ligand in technetium Tc 99m medronate (MDP) radiopharmaceuticals for bone imaging via single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). The mechanism involves binding to bone mineral and enabling detection of skeletal abnormalities through gamma ray emission from the technetium isotope[1][2][3][5][6]. Medronic acid itself is not typically used therapeutically but rather as part of diagnostic kits.
