Overview
This combination therapy consists of medroxyprogesterone acetate (Depo-Provera), a long-acting injectable contraceptive, and an estradiol acetate vaginal ring (Femring). Medroxyprogesterone acetate is a synthetic progestin that suppresses ovulation by inhibiting the secretion of pituitary gonadotropins. Femring is an estrogen-releasing ring used in this context to provide supplemental estrogen. The primary goal of this combination, as studied by Columbia University, is to reduce the incidence of irregular uterine bleeding (metrorrhagia) and improve continuation rates among women initiating Depo-Provera for contraception.
